Travel responsibly so that you have a positive impact on the local people you meet and their beautiful environment which you are visiting.
Your challenge is to think how you can travel responsibly before you book, while you are travelling and also when you get back. Here are some tips to aid in making your travel footprint a positive one:
- Choose responsible tourism (hotel / transport) operators – ask to see their responsible tourism policies, look at how they minimise their environmental impacts and how they support the local economy.
- Buy local – visit farmers markets, support local businesses.
- Follow the Tiaki Promise set by Tourism New Zealand and drive carefully, be prepared, show respect, protect nature and keep New Zealand clean.
- Use public transport, hire a bike or walk when convenient – it’s a great way to meet local people on their terms and reduce pollution and carbon emissions.
- Share with your friends and families memories of your travels encouraging them also to travel responsibly.

Huttons Shearwater Project
Hutton’s shearwater is an endangered seabird endemic to Kaikōura. The only place in the world that this species breeds is high in the Seaward Kaikōura Ranges at elevations between 1200 to 1800 metres.
